Coy Phillips

Jesse Coy, Son of Jess and Edna (Moore) Phillips was born on February 12, 1913 in Marble, Arkansas. As a small child the family moved to Oklahoma settling in the Sliver Springs community south of Freedom where Coy, along with his brothers and sisters attended school. When a young lad, Coy gave his heart to the Lord and lived a faithful life serving the Lord with joy and happiness each day. Coy was a farmer, but his love was ranching and his greatest joy was feeding his cattle and caring for them. Before ear tags were ever invented, Coy could match a mother cow to her baby calf without error and give you that cow's history back to when she was born. On June 1, 1935 he and Bessie Neff were married at her home in Freedom, Oklahoma. They made their home in the Hawkeye and Dillon communities south of Freedom until 1938 when they moved to the Fairvalley community. After their home burned to the ground they moved to the "Wheat" place until February 1961 when they moved to Alva. Coy served the on Board of Education at Farry, Fairvalley and District 100. He also served on the Board of the Federal Land Bank. After moving to Alva, he joined the Assembly of God Church where he attended faithfully as long as his health allowed. Bessie lost her battle with leukemia on August 20, 1981. On July 31, 1982, Coy married Oral Everett of Woodward and resided in Woodward until Oral's death on August 30, 2000. He returned to his home in Alva in September, 2000 and resided there until a broken foot bone in May, 2006 made it necessary for him to make a hospital visit. He then moved to Beadles Nursing Home where he resided until his death. Never having played Bingo before, he became an avid player and told his children often "I win every time!" Coy was known for his winning smile, always having something good to say about everyone, and especially for his honesty and integrity. A handshake meant a binding contract to him. Coy was blessed with excellent health. The only other time in his 93 years that he had been a patient in a hospital was in 1951. The horse he was riding fell with him when he was chasing a wandering bull. Coy leaves wonderful memories to his three sons and their wives, Gilbert Lee and Pam of Perry, OK, Leslie Eugene and Barbara of Enid, and Merlin Ray and Lorene of Oklahoma City and two daughters, Betty Elaine and her husband Roger Mantz of Alva, OK and JoRetta Kaye Doctor of Norman, OK; seven grandsons and their wives, Tracy and Patti of Mulhall, OK, Stacy and Marion of Ringwood, OK, Troy and Jill of Enid, OK, Marty and Cindy of Altus AF Base, Justin and Angie of Tecumseh, OK, Chad Mantz and Tyla of Enid,OK, Tyler Mantz and Alex of Alva, OK and three granddaughters and their husbands, Leslyn Chitwood and Greg of Enid, OK, Kristie Sullivan and Keith of Russia, and Brooke Bow and Wade of Norman, OK. Nine Great Grandsons, Cody Phillips and his wife Megan and Christopher Phillips of Mulhall, OK, Austin Phillips of Ringwood, OK, Parks Phillips, Trever Spomer, and Statton Mantz of Enid, OK and Gideon Sullivan of Russia, Dakota Phillips of Altus Air Force Base, and Ethan Phillips of Tecumseh, OK Four Great Granddaughters Brenda Croinster and Poke of Orlando, OK, Kandise Sissney and Jim of Wakomis, OK, Kimberly Phillips of Altus Air Force Base and Mary Elizabeth Sullivan of Russia. Three Great Great Granddaughters, Katelynn Croinster of Orlando, OK, and Kamryn and Karstyn Sissney of Wakomis, OK and one great great grandson, Hunter Green of Mulhall, OK Two brothers and their wives Carl Phillips and Bea and John Phillips and EvaLee of Mooreland, OK, and one sister-in-law, Margaret Windecker of Waynoka, OK.
