Sue Nelson
August 23, 1938 - July 7, 2011
Sue Jane, daughter of Mary Esther (Chowning) and Henry Stelson Nickell, was born on August 23, 1938 in Woodward, Oklahoma. She passed away at the Oklahoma City Integris Hospice House on the 7th day of July at the age of 72 years, 10 months and 23 days. She started school in Davenport where she finished grade school. In 1953 the family came to Alva and she graduated from Alva High School with the class of 1956. She received her Bachelors Degree in Elementary Education from Northwestern Oklahoma State University in 1961. Miss Nickell was married to Gerald (Garry) Dean Nelson June 2, 1961 at Alva First Christian Church. To their marriage three children Kristy, Kathy and Jim, were born. Following their marriage they made their home in Yale and Texhoma where she taught first grade for a total of 33 years. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church Texhoma, serving on the church board and sang in the choir, OEA, NEA, TEA and DAR. She was preceded in death by her father on September 14, 1985, her mother on October 7, 1989 and a brother Dr. Joe Nickell on February 25, 1991. Sue is survived by her husband Garry of the home; three children and their spouses, Kristy and Troy Irrer of Grosse Pointe Woods, Michigan, Kathy and John Maynard of Nolensville, Tennessee, and Jim and LuAnn of Liberal, Kansas; five grandchildren, Hannah and Halle Maynard; Morgan and Brooke Nelson, and Paige Irrer; a sister and her husband, Lynda and Terry Bixler of Waynoka; a sister-in-law, Karen Nickell of Oklahoma City; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
