June 16, 1938 - November 4, 2021
Ronald Duane was born June 16, 1938, in Indianapolis, IN, the 3rd of five children born to Dayton Russel and Evelyn Jeanette (Mendenhall) Carter. He passed away peacefully on November 4th, 2021 at Share Medical Center with loved ones at his side at the age of 83 years, 4 months and 19 days. He moved with his family to Kansas as a teenager and graduated from high school in St. John. Duane served in the US Army Reserves, receiving honorable discharge. He then began to further his education, attending both Wichita State University and Pratt Junior College. Duane was united in marriage to Floriene Ellen Graham on June 4, 1966 and they were blessed with 2 daughters, Dana Leann, and Kristy Lyn. Following their marriage they lived in Wichita, KS where Duane worked at Beech Aircraft, then moved to Hardtner, KS so he could finish his education. He graduated from Northwestern Oklahoma State University in 1971 with a degree in Education. Duane truly had the heart of an educator. As a young man, he always thought he would become "a teacher or preacher" like so many of his family before him. He taught social studies in Colby, KS, then moved with Floriene to his beloved community of Alva, OK. In Alva, he was a member of the First United Methodist Church, where he served on the Administrative Board for 45 years, taught Sunday school for many years, and made treasured life-long friendships in the Discovery Class. Duane found his professional calling in the Woods County Courthouse where he worked as a deputy for 10 years before becoming County Assessor in 1980 and serving until his retirement in 2001. Duane loved hunting, water skiing, snow skiing, and most of all, vacations. His happiest moments were spent with his family traveling throughout the United States and Europe. He was preceded in death by his parents and 2 brothers, Eldon Carter and Ken Carter. Duane leaves his wife, Floriene, of Alva, his 2 daughters and their husbands, Dana and David Manning, of Alva, and Kristy and Glen Pate of Smithville, MO. Six grandchildren, Dylan and Ashley Manning, Dalton Manning, Dawson Manning, Savannah Pate, and Carter Pate, a sister, Helen Streaker, a brother, Earl Carter and wife Mary, many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Memorial Contributions May Be Made to the Alva Educational Foundation (please make checks payable to C. F. O.) Through Wharton Funeral Chapel.
