Robert S Wharton

July 4, 1927 - December 24, 2016

Robert Samuel was born July 4, 1927 on the Livingston Homestead three miles northeast of Aline, OK. to Edna Beulah (Livingston) and Oliver Perry Wharton and passed away on December 24, 2016 at Alva, Ok. at the age of 89 years, 5 months, and 20 days. Bob attended and graduated from the Aline High School in 1945. He graduated from the Dallas Institute of Mortuary Science in 1949 and Northwestern State College, August 7, 1951 with a Bachelor of Science degree, with minors in chemistry, speech, history, economics & government. Mr. Wharton was married to Patsy R. Parker on her parent’s farm August 7, 1951. To their marriage three children were born, Patricia Ann, Robert Alan, and Robyn Sue. On January 1, 1962 they bought Stiles Funeral Chapel where he had been working and continued until time of his death. Bob was a member and elder of the First Christian Church of Alva. He also served on the Church Board and numerous other committees.. He was a Boy Scout Leader, member of the National, Oklahoma and Kansas Funeral Directors Association. He was past President of NWOSU Alumni Assoc. and Alva Rotary International Club where he received the Paul Harris Fellow Award, Past Worshipful Master of Alva Masons, member of Alva Eastern Star, Alva Moose Lodge, Alva Odd Fellows and the Alva BPO Elks. Bob was a Chairperson of Woods County Republican Party, Board member of Northwest Family Services, Northwest Domestic Crisis Services, Share Medical Center, ABC Club. Alva Youth Council, PTA, NWOSU Homecoming Parade (for numerous years in charge of convertibles). In 1995 he was a volunteer for the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner after the Alfred P. Murrah Building bombing. He was Parade Marshal for Aline/Cleo High School homecoming, in 2002 Alva Citizen of the year, and NWOSU Outstanding Graduate Award in 2008. Bob loved listening to NWOSU Ranger football and watching OKC Thunder basketball. Preceding Bob in death were his parents, Oliver & Edna Wharton, his wife Patsy and two brothers, Corky and James. He is survived by daughters, Patty and Kelly Pulliam, Alva, Robyn & Mike Dunkleberger, Skiatook, and son, Alan and Coletta Wharton, grandchildren, Kasady Bradford, Kade Pulliam, Christopher Wharton, Kilicia & Nick Spaulding, Kieara & Landon Johnson, Micah and Becca Dunkleberger, and great- grandchildren, Kellen Bradford Keagan Johnson, Breya, Brylee, Briston and Christopher Jr. Wharton. Bob is also survived by his sister Clara Warren of Colorado Springs and three sisters-in-laws; Ruth Parker, Vera Parker and Lydia Parker and many nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Alva First Christian Church for the new church foyer.
