Hazel Naomi Spencer

April 21, 1913 - February 27, 2011

Hazel Naomi Holt, daughter of Andrew and Leah (Rodgers) Holt was born April 21 1913 near Woodward, Oklahoma and passed away February 27, 2011, at 97 years, 10 months and 6 days in Alva, Oklahoma. Living on a farm near Carmen, Oklahoma, she was the fourth of eight children, (two brothers and six sisters). Despite a handicap from polio at age 10, thru her life she was a wife, loving mother, farm hand, dental assistant, waitress and dietitian. She was united in marriage to Henry Leonard Spencer, October 10, 1938 at Cherokee, Oklahoma, and blessed with four children, Rebecca (Becky), Sharon, Terry and Anita. They made their home on a farm northwest of Alva. In 1953, they moved near Mulhall, Oklahoma, operating a dairy farm, and returned to Alva in 1959. Hazel loved the Lord's natural world, especially enjoying birds and their songs. Gardens of fruit and pecan trees, grapes, vegetables, shrubs and flowers surrounded her. Many hours were spent planting, tilling, picking and canning food. She was a member of the Barnes Street Church of Christ. Preceded in death by husband Leonard, February 24, 1990, daughter Rebecca Betchan and husband Frank, and great granddaughter, Tori Ann Dodge; three sisters and their husbands: Ethel and John Lakely, Velma and Harry Rhodes, Leola and Raymond Rhodes; two brothers and their wives: Clifford and Pauline Holt, Alfred and Lucille Holt; infant sister Delphia, and brother in law Rosco Rhodes. Survived by daughters, Sharon McElveen, and Anita and her husband Steve Jacobson and son, Terry Spencer and his wife Sue; Ten grandchildren: Cindy and her husband Phillip Dodge, Sandy and her husband Tommy Bross Jr., Paul and his wife Elaine McElveen, Robert and his wife Billie McElveen, Mark McElveen, Shaun Spencer, Brandon Spencer and his wife Gretchen, Ryan Jacobson, Alicia and her husband Shane Smith, and Amanda Jacobson; fourteen great grandchildren: Dustin Dodge, Shayla Dodge, Cody Garrett, Candace Hamel, T.J. Bross, Dwight McElveen, Conner McElveen, Tanner McElveen, Linda McElveen, Zach McElveen, Jessie Spencer, Jillian Spencer, Trinady Smith, and Olivia Smith; 3 great-great grandchildren: Riley McElveen, Oryan McElveen, and Annalisa McElveen; two sisters: Freda Rhodes and Verda and her husband Dean Murrow; a number of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
