Reva Jean Maddox

Reva Jean, eldest child of Virgil and Betty (Bliss) Hoffman, was born December 27, 1949 in Alva, Oklahoma. She accepted Christ into her life when she was eight years old, and she was baptized on August 19, 1990. A member of the First United Methodist Church of Alva since January 31, 1999, she has loved being a member of the Prayer Shawl Ministry Group since 2016. Reva graduated as valedictorian of her eighth grade class at Centerview Grade School in 1964 and of her senior class at Freedom High School in 1968. In 1971 she graduated magna cum laude from Northwestern State College (now Northwestern Oklahoma State University) in Alva with a double major in home economics and secretarial science. As a college student, Reva worked on campus. She then worked at Alva State Bank, the Woods County Clerk’s Office and the Woods County Health Department prior to accepting a position with the East Woods County Conservation District on August 1, 1986. She was promoted to District Programs Coordinator on October 1, 1990. On February 24, 1992 Reva became a charter member of the Oklahoma Association of Conservation District Employees; she served two years as OACDE Area I director and also served as editor of the OACDE Newsletter from January 1996 through January of 2000. In 1993, Reva received the Adeline Laird award as Oklahoma’s outstanding conservation district secretary. She was recognized by OACDE in 2008 as the state’s outstanding conservation district employee. On May 13, 1971 Reva was united in marriage to Roy William Black at Cherokee, Oklahoma. To their union, two sons Kevin Clay and Kelly Alan were born. They lived on a farm west of Freedom, Oklahoma until moving to their farm north of Alva in 1973. Roy passed away on March 23, 1986. Reva purchased a home in Alva, moving there in July of 1993 and living there until her marriage to Mickey Dwight Maddox on February 14, 2003 in Stillwater, Oklahoma. At that time, the couple moved back to the farm. A dedicated wife and mother, Reva devotedly promoted her family’s activities. In 1975 Reva began baking and decorating cakes for the special occasions in the lives of her family and friends. Her unique creations have graced the festivities at many area birthday, wedding, anniversary and graduation celebrations. She served as a leader in the Alva and Woods County 4-H organizations for twelve years and was recognized in 1993 as the outstanding Woods County 4-H leader. Reva has continued to support the 4-H program at all levels; in June of 1997, she served as a sponsor for over eighty Oklahoma teenage delegates to the Citizenship Washington, D.C. Focus. She also served as a Cub Scout den mother for eight years, as Cub Scout secretary/treasurer for five years, and as the poultry superintendent at the Woods County Fair and Woods County Poultry Shows for five years. In 1998 she became a charter member and an officer of the Friends of the Alva Public Library; she has served that organization as historian, president, secretary and treasurer. In 1999, she helped start the annual Chocolate Fantasy, which is held to raise funds for the library; and she has served as its auction clerk each year. In 2007 Reva had the idea to start a one-day Youth EXPO during which youth could enjoy hands-on activities to help them learn about and better appreciate the environment around them. For ten years, she coordinated this annual event that reached thousands of people of all ages. In 2022 she began serving as a board member of the museum board in Freedom, Oklahoma. Reva is survived by her husband, Mickey, and her sons, Kevin Black and his wife Fawn of Dumas, Texas, and Kelly Black and his wife Amy of Stillwater, Oklahoma; as well as her siblings, numerous nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and many others whose lives she has touched. She was preceded in death by her parents, Virgil and Betty Hoffman and Roy Black.
