Joy Sherman

Joy Ann (Cameron) Sherman was born on November 9, 1932 to Mabel Sarah (Dyer) and John N. Cameron in Alva, Oklahoma and passed away on November 22, 2013 at the age of 81 Years and 13 Days. Joy was raised in Alva and was salutatorian of her Alva High School class of 1950. She also attended Northwestern Oklahoma State University and graduated in 1954 with a double major in Elementary Education and Home Economics. Joy married Sheldon Sherman on May 22, 1951 and resided in Capron, Oklahoma with their three children, Janet, Larry John and Tom. Sheldon and Joy later made their home in Alva. She loved spending time with her family, being a part of her grandchildren and great grandchildren’s lives and going out to dinner with her wonderful friends. She also enjoyed the Northwestern Antique Car Club with her loved ones and friends. Joy touched many lives as a teacher for 28 years at both Capron and Alva Public Schools. She was a devoted member of the Capron Methodist Church and then the First United Methodist Church of Alva. Joy received numerous local, state and national awards throughout her teaching career and through her volunteer work. She was a member of Rainbows, Eastern Star, P.E.O. Chapter AL, Delta Zeta Sorority, United Methodist Women and other civic organizations for over 50 years. Joy was recognized as Woman of the Year in 2007 by the American Association of University Women. She took pride in serving on various organizations in her community such as; the Cherokee Strip Museum Board, Nescatunga Arts and Humanities Council, the Holly Club and was a great ambassador for the Alva community. Joy’s motto in life was “Investing time in others, both young and old, both young people and adults, pays great dividends. God has given me the opportunity to do all I can in each stage of my life to be able to help enrich the lives of others.” Joy was preceded in death by her parents, John N. and Mabel Cameron, her husband Sheldon Sherman and her very dear friend Betty Jo Pangburn. She was survived by her cherished companion Darrel Pearson, her children Janet Benson, Larry John Sherman and his wife Denise and Tom Sherman and his wife Karen. Her grandchildren, Sarah and Mike Hutcherson, Brandon and Sarah Sherman, Sarah and Kevin Mitchell, Landon Sherman, Jennifer Sherman and Scott Benson. Her great grandchildren Heidi, Shane, Ace, Sophia Joy and Maddux.
