Biography
Ellen Merlene, daughter of Anna (Martin) and Charles Maphet, was born July 30, 1923 near Gate, Oklahoma. She passed away at the Alva Share Medical Center on the 15th of July at the age of 86 years, 11 months and 15 days.
She attended the Gate School System where she graduated from High School. After school she moved to Wichita and worked for Beech Aircraft Plant as “Rosie the Riveter,” later moving back to Buffalo working at the Buffalo Drug Store as a soda jerk.
On April 6, 1947 at the First Christian Church in Buffalo she was married to Edgar Cub Miller. To their marriage three children; Roger, Rosalyn, and Norma Lee were born.
Following their marriage they lived in Buffalo. In 1957 they came to Alva where she cooked at Longfellow School, worked at Share Convalescent Home and served as a Pink Lady.
She was a member of the Buffalo Christian Church and later attended the Alva Assembly of God Church.
Mrs. Miller was preceded in death by her husband on May 5, 2003; her parents and ten brothers and sisters.
Merlene is survived by her son and his wife, Roger and Sharon of Alva, two daughters Rosalyn and her husband Court Newkirk of Lawton and Norma Lee Miller of Billings, six grandchildren: Shonda and John Rea of Lansing, Kansas, Kerri Carrell of Laverne, Randon and Kristi Miller of Enid, Charles E. and Cary Harding of Oklahoma City, Capt. Court Newkirk and Jayme of Beale Airforce Base, California and Kyle Newkirk of Oklahoma City; eight great-grandchildren: Jeff and Madison Rea of Lansing; Christian Glocky and Corbin Harding of Oklahoma City; Olivia and Eleni Carrell of Laverne, Hunter Miller and Taylor Sladek of Enid, a number of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
